Real life examples - showing you how Canny Dog programmes are designed around each dogs needs and yours, no one programme is the same, we hope these examples will give you an insight into how our services are applied to truly suit individual requirements
Client - Fido
Age - Three
Reason for hire - Poor Fido! He was such a happy, bouncy chap he just couldn't understand that not everyone wanted to meet him, play with him, give him treats or enjoy his over enthusiastic and frankly (rough) greetings and attention.
Fido was also a very strong puller on lead. The moment the door opened he was off! Dragging his poor owner down the road. On sighting a possible new friend, the pulling turned into frantic lunging too. When he was held back by his harness and lead, he became frustrated and frantic. Barking, spinning, lunging and finally biting his lead.
We worked with Fido over a period of months, as well as One-One co-coaching Training we were also able to recommend and lend a comfy harness and lead combo which took a lot of strain out of his walking while he was learning.
We worked on his impulse control and put his 'meets and greets' on a permission basis. As well as strengthening his Recall away from those pesky temptations and promoting calm and connection when he's out and about.
We were able to research local walks away from his prime temptations at first, so both he and his owner could enjoy a period of decompression.
We built play and mental stimulation into his daily routines so the walk wasn't such a big deal anymore.
As well as his co-coach session Fido had dedicated Walk and Train sessions on his own with us too.
Finally we tested his new skills in safe set ups with our lovely human and canine stooges.
Throughout his programme Fido's owner knew that we were just a phone call/text/email away.
We gave bite-sized tasks as we went along, avoiding overwhelm and making sure we progressed at their pace.
Client - Pumkin
Age - 18 months
Reason for hire - Dear little Pumkin, a precious girl who hadn't quite mastered the art of peeing/pooing outside only. After a thorough analysis and a Vet check we were quickly able to recommend new routines.
We were able to advise what to get rid of (tempting textiles) and what to use to eleminate all lurking biological traces in favourite loo places indoors.
A complete re-set of her toilet training followed.
After months of struggling we solved the issue in one Behavioural Consultation and two weeks phone support. Job(y) Done!
Client - Barry
Age - 6
Reason for Hire - Artful picnic raider, pavement scavenger and fox poo roller.
Barry's Programme - We began with co-coaching at home, so Barry was able to really master his new training cues away from temptation.
We then took it on the road with a series of Walk and Train appointments. For management and to save the wrath of our community we used a very long training lead to begin(just in case).
Once we were able to dispense with the special lead we continued to practise in more and more tempting environments (school trip group with snack laden backpacks anyone!)
Now we were able to recall Barry away from pork pies, sausage rolls and scotch eggs! As well as successfully interupt and re-direct a shoulder dip towards foxy poo before it goes into a full roll.
Finally we enjoyed 3 co-coach walks with his owner to transfer all his new skills to them too.
Client - Poppy
Age - 9 weeks
Reason for hire - First time puppy for a family of four.
Poppy's family wanted comprehensive guideance on all aspects of life with their new puppy. They enjoyed 8 dedicated visits including a two hour pre-puppy appointment, where we were able to advise on keeping puppy safe at home, interactions with the children, setting up for successful toilet training from day one and we even provided an essential Puppy Shopping list.
As well as Training, Socialisation and management advice, they enjoyed One-One co-coaching, a Small group joint class with two other of our local puppies and Poppy got to come out with us on her own on special socialisation and habituation outings.
We were able to give the family confidence and were honoured to be part of their important first weeks/months with their new family dog. Happy days!
Client - Fred
Age - 7 (approx)
Reason for hire - Newly adopted, scared and reactive
Clever Fred had done brilliantly adapting to his new family and home. What he found harder was being out and about particularly when he was on lead and other dogs approached him.
We worked with Fred and his family in helping them all to keep safe and sound on their walks and reduce the stress especially for Fred. This included muzzle training, lead handling, walk enrichment, and teaching Fred some new coping strategies and behaviours.
This is a process which can take some time and involved changes to walking routines and locations to begin. Gently and with careful progression we were able to help Fred re-associate his previous anxiety with new responses.
Happily walks today are much more enjoyable events for everyone.
